Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length.

Veneers Q & A

How long do veneers last on your teeth?

On average, veneers last about 10 years, and as dental porcelain becomes stronger and more durable, their lifespan may increase significantly over the next several years. Of course, veneers, like natural teeth, are still susceptible to damage.

Do veneers ruin your teeth?

Porcelain veneers are not made of enamel like the front of your natural teeth. This actually gives you some benefits, the principal being that they do not stain like your normal teeth would. This means that having the veneers attached does not ruin or hurt the tooth underneath.

Can veneers be replaced?

When your veneers do eventually wear out, they will need to be replaced. Replacing the veneer is a very similar process to the initial installation. Your dentist will file away as much of the old bonding agent and then take a mold of your teeth.

Are veneers permanent?

Although porcelain veneers are not considered a permanent procedure since they will likely have to be replaced at some point, they can last for decades as long as you take care of them properly. Some patients may never need to replace them at all. Porcelain veneers are, however, irreversible.

How many veneers should I get?

When you smile wide, you want all your teeth to match and look good. For many people, this will mean having eight veneers on their upper teeth. For other people, ten or twelve might be needed. And for others, only one to four veneers will meet their goal of masking imperfect teeth.
